'Spacious fields of colour and spontaneous, graceful brushstrokes create an irresistible Zen-like calm. His inspirations come from his interest in all things Japanese, but the main source of his abstract imagery is Scottish landscape... bridges, crumbling piers and disintegrating shipwrecks.' - Article by Lucy Sweet, 'Homes and Interiors Scotland' February 2004. Coastal fragments particularly interest me, such as the calligraphic rhythm of piers interacting with elemental open spaces... the relationship between the man-made and the organic fascinates me. Since graduating my travels to Japan have greatly influenced my painting practice. The clarity, freshness and energy of Zen painting and also Haiku poetry really inspires me. To best express my connection to the motif, I try to work with the same fluidity in oil paint on canvas as I would with sumi ink on paper. |
