I make work to suit a contemporary setting. It is my goal to make something that the user can view as special or important to them. There are two ranges of work which make reference to the theme of a cinematic process called Day for Night or Nuit Amricaine. It is a phenomenon in which night scenes are shot during the day for logistical or technical reasons. It is a slight and personal tongue-in-cheek comment to the West where I grew up as this process was used extensively in the height of Western/Cowboy cinema.
Travelling from my hometown of Calgary to Halifax in eastern Canada for College, moving to Asia to teach, and finally to Scotland where I now live and work, has informed, although at times unintentionally, my work over the last 11 years. Paring down the elements of the historical and contemporary ceramic work I like, and finding out why I like them, has always been a part of my practice. Taking these reasons to the wheel has given me a three dimensional palette and language. The practical forms I make include cruets, ewers, jugs, bottles, bowls, mugs and cups. These objects are all still utilized in our homes in the 21st century. I hope these objects enhance the home, provide a reasonable alternative to disposable ceramics, and present ceramics as a progressive form of expression not something completely reliant on the past.
