Group XII Textile Artists was formed 10 years ago by 12 students studying City & Guilds Creative Studies - Embroidery at Edinburgh's Telford College. Success has meant that the group has grown to its present maximum membership of twenty-five. All members have completed Parts I and II City & Guilds and now come from all over Scotland.

The group's members are like-minded individuals who work independently using a wide range of individual styles from the traditional to the more contemporary. The common ground is stitch-based with the materials and subjects being vastly diverse. Intensity of colour and abundance of stitch in some of the group's work contrasts strongly with the elements of contemporary pieces, where content is concentrated in a minimalist format.

Through our exhibitions we strive to raise the public's awareness and appreciation of stitched textiles as an art form. Traditional techniques are used, and through a process of experimentation and forced change, rules are broken creating unconventional and often unpredictable outcomes using all kinds of materials and media. If you look closely you will often find unlikely, and almost unrecognisable elements, which have undergone a recycling process, or simply put to an alternative, innovative use. In addition to this hand-dyeing, weaving, manipulation of paper, fabric and plastic techniques are all present in much of our work.
