Fin Macrae was born in Inverness and grew up on the coast of Wester Ross, Scotland. He
currently lives in Tain, Ross-shire with his wife Margo.
A self-taught photographer, Fin takes his inspiration from the sea and the land as well as the
people who inhabit it. His work often alludes to what lies outside the frame and invites the viewer
to imagine the landscape. He is attracted to small details; focusing on the minutia of the wider
picture. He has been influenced by the work of a variety of photographers - Josef Koudelka's eye
for detail, Edward Weston's landscapes, David Kokos' & Rolfe Horn's minimalism and perhaps
most significantly Sebastiao Salgado's ability to capture the essence of life.
The simplicity of line, balance and detail is evident in his work. In a landscape that by nature or the
hand of man changes constantly, Fin constantly looks for cohesion and unity between the
elements of earth, water and air - very often with some evidence of humanity's interaction with the
land.
He is quickly building a reputation as a bright new talent and was recently selected as one of only
ten young British visual artists to exhibit at The Creative Industries Party at the V&A in September
2005.
