| My art practice involves an ongoing investigation of the creation of 'fictional', enigmatic cityscapes. These cityscapes are linked with specific spaces and places, but the views shown are not what they should be. They are real, but they are also unreal. The unusual lighting, the improbable angles of the buildings and the three-dimensional elements work together to suggest an abstracted vision of bizarre urban environments. The works are made using paper. The images are carefully constructed and layered, before being lit and photographed or scanned. The pieces exist as small sculptures and are not computer edited in any way. The idea of creating small fictional environments echoes work by Mariele Neudecker and Thomas Demand. At present, these pieces are relatively small, but I hope that they are paving the way to creations which have a greater degree of impact and perhaps more theatrical properties. |
