James Smith is a Fellow of the Chartered Society of Designers and has had a successful career in the graphic design field for many years. He was educated at Scotland Street School and Forfar Academy before being conscripted in 1944 and spent three years as a cartographer in the army in Germany. His three months demobilisation leave was spent at Glasgow School of Art as a non-diploma student drawing and painting before returning to civilian life. He lives in Glasgow where the proximity of the Argyllshire countryside has been a strong influence on his painting. Many visits to Greece and the island of Crete in particular where the similar landscape elements of sea and hills predominate but are transformed by a different climate and culture, have stimulated him to a richer awareness of the quality of colour in the softer and subtler Scottish scene. He has won the Laings Landscape Scottish Competition on two occasions. Website, text, images and designs all © Panik Designs 2003 |
