One way or another I have been making pottery in Edinburgh since the early 1970's, setting up The Adam Pottery in 1983. This now provides studio space for up to five other potters and ceramists, with an adjoining gallery where we all show our work.
When I first started up on my own, I made mainly repetition domestic ware, in plainly-glazed stoneware. Over the years "one-off" pieces have come to the fore, although function has remained central to my work. I enjoy making in contrasting scales - anything from delicate porcelain bowls to imposing outdoor planters, together with a wide variety of different forms and ways of decorating. Most of my work is wheelthrown; the larger pieces have added-on coils which are then thrown, while sometimes the thrown piece is used as a starting-point for making oval or other forms.
The glazes are all reduction-fired in a gas kiln, which can give unusual and sometimes unpredictable results. I experiment with different layers and applications of glaze, using many of my original recipes but with far more freedom than before. The excitement of opening the kiln never palls, whatever the outcome may be, with the lure of further possibilities and discoveries keeping me going.
My work is sold mainly from the Pottery, although I also take part in group Exhibitions throughout Scotland.
