Melanie graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1964 and was employed as a Fashion Artist in 1964 & 1965 with Edinburgh Evening News; thereafter between 1973 and 1990 as a Teacher of Art in a variety of schools in Fernhill, Bishopbriggs and Dumbarton. In 1988 she opened Aldessan Gallery and Batik Studio in Campsie Glen. She produced batik paintings and one-off scarves in the studio and taught workshops in art and the craft of batik. The gallery and studio were sold in 2004. Melanie started painting in acrylics around 1998, subject matter mainly influenced by time spent in France.
