Michelle graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1993 with a BA(Hons) in Ceramics, and gained a P.G. Dip Ceramic Design in 1994. A Princes Trust Travel Grant in 1995 enabled her to move to Hungary where she worked with various ceramacists and glass artists at the Ketchkemet International Ceramics Studio. The following year Michelle worked in a small production pottery, in Nyons, Provence, specialising in Raku smoke fired pieces. The move into a new studio in January has prompted a brand new body of work, continuing themes of duality, growth and decay, the tension of suggested movement. Firing to earthenware temperatures, using coloured slips and glazes, she builds up wafts of colour to accentate the texture and form of the sculptural pieces. Her plates and bowls are raku fired using a copper glaze to produce lustrous metallic surfaces and smoke-blackened clay. These pieces are seen more as artifacts, unearthed, elemental.
