Pascal Margat completed his studies at the Beaux Arts de Paris in 1985, and began his first period of figurative paintings. These were immediately stamped with the instantly-recognisable style of the artist: Margat's figures are always strong-thighed, solid yet angular, with a tendency to aquiline noses. From these beginnings, Margat went on to explore different forms of expression: hyper-realism, classicism which culminated in a four-year period in which he explored his subconscious in the form of pseudo-geometric works. Initially paintings, these transmuted to bas-reliefs and then to sculptures, finishing the period with design applications (mirrors, lamps, folding screens). In Margat's present period, he has returned to the figurative. First of all in the form of intricate bas-reliefs, then back to his favourite form of expression: painting. The sturdy, Romanesque figures so easily recognisable as Margat's, carry with them the three-dimensions of the previous period in the form of trompe-l'oeil. History, symbolism, mythology, and the artist's ubiquitous humour are once again present, but this time his own personal world has come creeping in: books and articles he has read, his companion, his dog. Margat's mysterious inner world and never-ending talent continue to unravel in front of our eyes.
