Thomas J Henry was born in 1961 and current works from his studio in Symington, South Lanarkshire.

He studied at Edinburgh College of Art 1979-1983 under Sir Robin Phillipson and went on to gain a teaching qualification at St Andrew's College of Education. Entering teaching 1984 he taught in schools in Fort Augustus, Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Tom also joined the Royal Navy Reserve in 1984 and worked primarily with cadets and at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth as a Divisional Officer on the annual summer courses.

After a period of ill health, he gave up full-time teaching in the summer of 2004 to pursue a career as a professional artist. He still enjoys teaching and teaches two days a week in primary schools where hopefully he can pass on some of his enthusiasm for my subject.

Tom has always painted throughout his teaching career, although mainly for his own professional development and satisfaction. He also received many commissions for portraits mostly through his connection with the services. Since leaving teaching Tom has had work exhibited at galleries in East Lothian, St Andrews, Glasgow and in Biggar, where he had a successful solo exhibition. He has also recently completed a residency with South Lanarkshire Arts Unit/Arts Council in the spring of 2006.
